After an inspirational journey that’s seen him go from The Donkey Sanctuary in Ireland to the British Dressage Arena, Wallace, the mule from Dursely, Gloucestershire dubbed “Wallace the Great” has achieved an historic win, becoming the first Dressage Mule to participate in a competition and winning!
Earlier this month, The Board of Directors at British Dressage released a statement that included an update to horse definition bringing it in line with the FEI General Regulations 2018, allowing mules to compete at British Dressage tests.
This meant that Wallace who as a half-donkey, half-horse, had been previously locked out of such competitions and unable to be a member of British Dressage, could now freely enter and compete.
The change followed a long campaign by owner Christie McLean, and this weekend at a Dressage competition in the UK, Wallace the mule came out on top winning his first ever dressage competition.
Social Media erupted with praise for the fan favourite and Christie made clear how much the support of the fans has helped her and Wallace reach this moment and how much the win meant, exclaiming on her Facebook page:
“I fully admit that the pressure was firmly there, we’d come this far and although I trust Wallace 100%, would I remember to breathe. But those big ears flop to the side and he’s in work mode, legend! I must
admit he did everything I asked of him and watching the video back I was thrilled, he rode beautifully! I think the BBC caught the tears and cheers when the results were announced”
I cannot thank EVERYONE enough for the huge amounts of support for Wallace, knowing that he has a chance in life makes it even more heartwarming “
