A bold, front running ride from jockey Jye McNeil riding in his first Melbourne Cup, saw Twilight Payment storm home to win the 2020 Lexus Melbourne Cup.
It was the 7th Melbourne Cup win for owner Lloyd Williams, and trainer Joseph O’Brien’s second Cup win.
Jockey Jye McNeil, who became a father to son Oakley with fellow jockey Jess Payne earlier this year, was emotional at the finish. On a race day with no spectators or connections allowed at the venue, this did not take away from his delight: “I have a lot of emotions right now, this is a very good moment. Jess and our boy, them and a long list of other people watching from home will be very proud.”
Race favourite Tiger Moth finished second, ahead of three time Melbourne Cup placegetter Prince of Arran in third place.
Tragically Anthony Van Dyck broke down during the race and did not finish; the horse is reported to be under veterinary care with an update to come.
