The 1992 Melbourne Cup winner and 2014 Racing Hall of Fame inductee Subzero will today celebrate his 30th birthday with friends and fans. The loveable grey is not only renowned for his Cup win and many years of work as a Clerk of the Course horse, but also his retirement spent visiting schools, hospitals and nursing homes with handler Graham Salisbury.
The birthday bash takes place today (Sunday), with organisers having to close off invitations for the free event weeks ago due to an overwhelming response. The event comes in the lead up to the official horses’ birthday, which is next Wednesday (August 1st).
According to Subzero’s Facebook page, “Over 130 friends and fans of all ages and from all over the country have registered to come and spend time up close and personal with Subbie… We have been overwhelmed by the love for Subbie and Graham and this will be a special celebration.”
Graham, who is battling cancer, was due for another bout of chemo treatment a few days ago, but it’s expected he will attend today’s event: “There will be no way he’d miss seeing all their friends and fans on Sunday”.
Australian of the Year Awards
It was announced recently that Subzero was nominated for Australian of the Year Awards – unfortunately the National Australia Day Council has rejected Subbie (on account of him not being a “human”). However, there has been countless nominations off that for Graham – paving the way for the pair’s amazing work to be recognised.
You can nominate Graham for his tireless work with Subbie here.
