There have long been calls to improve horse welfare, traceability and biosecurity in Australia; the new Horse Passport app aims to be part of the solution.

The newly released Horse Passport app, designed and developed for all breeds and disciplines, is digitising how equestrians maintain and manage their horses’ records.

Creating a digital footprint for every Australian horse, including those used in competition, the Horse Passport app enables horse owners to log events and appointments, upload documents, set reminders and keep a timeline of all activities in their horse’s schedule.

The Horse Passport app is also the first app in the Australian horse industry that offers the capability to log and validate a horse’s location, accessible anywhere at any time.

“Horse Passport is an indispensable app for equestrians, which allows them to spend more time with their horses and less time managing paper records,” app developer and long-time horseman Clive Smith said today.

“I understand how much time equestrians have to spend keeping track of events, appointments and other important reminders using pen and paper, or across a multitude of unrelated apps on their smartphone.

“The Horse Passport app is an all-in-one digital diary for equestrians that allows them to maintain an accurate historical record of all the important events in their horse’s life in a central and secure portal.

“Bills, ownership papers, links to past performances and veterinary records – all can be added within the Horse Passport app to create a portfolio against the horse that can be referred to in the future.”

Developed and field tested with the input of specialist equine professionals, including equine veterinarians, dentists, farriers, trainers and transport operators, every action within the app takes no more than three clicks.

“Horse Passport has been designed with equestrians in mind to save them time and simplify their record management systems. More than just a digital diary, it’s also an invaluable tool to refer to when buying or selling horses.

“For competitive riders and owners in dressage, show jumping and eventing, having an accurate history of the horse, the veterinary care it has received and notes about its behaviour and performance makes the sales process more transparent.”

An additional benefit of the Horse Passport app is its location features, which mark a huge advancement in horse traceability and disease outbreak control, moving the Australian equestrian industry into the digital age.

“Competitive events are the lifeblood of the equestrian industry and major disease outbreaks in the horse and human world have shown us how impacted the industry is when events are shut down across jurisdictions.

“As more and more equestrians download and use Horse Passport in their daily lives, we are on our way to finding better solutions for a myriad of issues, including horse traceability, disease management processes and biosecurity threats.”

ABOUT HORSE PASSPORT:

The Horse Passport app is available now on the App Store and Google Play. Horse Passport is for horse owners and responsible parties providing care on behalf of owners. Horse Passport SP is for specialist equine professionals.

“If we are serious about horse welfare, traceability and biosecurity in Australia, there are some basic principles that need to change, starting with cultural change and the adoption of a digital footprint leveraging smartphone technology linked to a unified system:

1.     Digital record of the horse at time of birth through to end of life.
2.     Authorised vaccinations regime that can be referenced.
3.     Reference to the chain of owners and proof of ownership based on sales history.
4.     A digital record of the work provided by service provider professionals.
5.     Location of the horse and ongoing movement of the horse.
6.     Management of all horses in transit, across and in/out of Australia.

The solution needs to be secure, the participants and horse facilities licensed and governed by independent entities. If we address points 1-6, we will be better placed to manage the next disease outbreak that threatens all horse breeds and participant’s revenue.”
