Jodie leaves behind an extraordinary legacy as a trailblazer, competitor, mentor and passionate advocate for the sport she loved. As the first Australian para driver to gain FEI classification, she broke new ground for para driving in this country and proudly represented Australia on the world stage on multiple occasions.
Among her many achievements, one stands above all others. At the 2023 FEI Para Driving World Championship in Exloo, the Netherlands, Jodie delivered a performance that secured her place in Australian equestrian history, claiming the individual Grade I bronze medal. It was a landmark moment, marking the first para driving World Championship medal ever won by an Australian.
In the lead-up to those Championships, Jodie had described her ambition to compete at a World Championship as “mission possible.” True to her determined spirit, she not only achieved that goal but exceeded it, inspiring countless others along the way.
Jodie continued to represent her nation with pride, returning to the world stage at the 2025 FEI Para Driving World Championship in Lähden, where she finished 12th in Grade I.
Horses and driving were woven into the fabric of Jodie’s life. Her parents drove harness horses for the film industry; Jodie began driving as a child and went on to successfully compete harness horses at Royal Shows, particularly the Warlander horses bred by her mother, Evanne Chesson.
While her competitive accomplishments were significant, those who knew Jodie will remember her just as fondly for her generosity, encouragement and unwavering commitment to the driving community. She was a familiar face at driving clinics throughout Victoria and a dedicated volunteer with the Driving Valkenswaard International (DVI) team in Europe, always willing to share her knowledge, give her time and support fellow competitors.
Jodie’s influence on Australian para driving extends far beyond medals and results. Through her courage, perseverance and passion, she helped pave the way for future generations of para drivers and demonstrated what can be achieved through determination and belief.
She will be remembered for her pioneering spirit, her kindness, and her lifelong love of horses.
