Next weekend’s prestigious Sydney CDI will again offer Spectator Judging for the second year in a row, allowing the audience to test their skills as a judge.
For those who are unfamiliar with the concept of Spectator Judging, it’s basically an app that allows the audience to get in the judge’s seat and to give marks for the competing riders. Although Spectator Judging scores have no influence on the official score, they are compared and shown alongside the official judge’s scores as the event progresses. Audience scores and rankings are created in real-time, with the Spectator Judging score being the average of all those scoring the test on the app.
The app runs on SAP Cloud Technology and is completely free to download and use. It provides users with three different modes: The “full mode” allows spectators to score movement by movement just like the official judges do; the “short mode”, which delivers a shorter test sheet and the more relaxing “quick mode” that allows the user to enter a single result.
Spectator Judging was introduced and tested as a revolutionary concept by SAP, the market leader in enterprise application software, and CHIO Aachen in 2013 with the aim to actively engage the audience in dressage sports. In 2017, German technology start-up Black Horse One, led by Daniel Göhlen – a software developer, rider and judge himself – and technology giant SAP joined forces and combined their expert knowledge and capabilities to present the new Spectator Judging® app – powered by SAP technology – for all interested organizers. It has been used at a wide range of top level dressage events — including the FEI World Cup Dressage Series, and most recently the WEG 2018 test events. Adaptations for Vaulting, Driving and now also Show Jumping have been made available and have proven to be a hit with the audience.
Promoting stronger fan involvement and a more intense engagement with the sport of dressage, the Spectator Judging app is great fun for fans — and great news for the sport here in Australia.
The app is available for free in the App Store and Google Play — make sure you download it in time for next weekend’s event!
