Defending champion returns

The defending Adelaide CCI5*L champions, David Middleton and WEC In The Money, lead what is shaping up to be a seriously competitive 2025 field. This combination is in great form, having won the CCI4*S at Ballarat last start. David has a second ride with mare WEC In The Breeze, who also contested last year’s Adelaide CCI5*L.

Back again

Also returning to the CCI5* field in 2025 will be Gordon Bishop and Advantage Hill, who are back to contest their third Adelaide CCI5*. Andrew Cooper is entered again with Hey Arnold for a second attempt and will also saddle up Sharvalley Thunder – a CCI4*S winner last start at Tamworth – for the horse’s first five-star.

Kirilee Hosier and AEA Flynn are another experienced Adelaide CCI5*L combination and will be back for a third time after finishing fourth last year and ninth in 2023.

Donna Edwards-Smith of New Zealand will saddle up Thoroughbred DSE Mendoza for their second attempt at Adelaide CCI5*L; last year, they placed third.

Sophia Hill and her Thoroughbred Humble Glory will be keen to put last year’s Burghley CCI5*L experience to good use in what will be their second Adelaide CCI5*L. With a third-place finish in 2023, they certainly know what it takes to succeed at Adelaide.

Shooting for a fourth win

And of course, there is Hazel Shannon and 19-year-old Thoroughbred Willingapark Clifford who will make their sixth appearance in the prestigious class. This combination has won a record three times (2016, 2018 and 2019). Last year, they were fourth in the CCI4*S at the event.

Plenty of Thoroughbreds

Seven Thoroughbreds are entered for this year’s event, and alongside the aforementioned three, Olympian Shane Rose will saddle up both Matrixx and The Bandit for their CCI5*L debuts.

The Olympic and World Championship combination of Bold Venture and Shenae Lowings are also making their five-star debut, as are Airbrushed and Joel Funnell.

More five-star debutants

Other combinations making their five-star debut at this year’s event include the 2024 Sydney CCI4*L winners Samuel Jeffree and Santoro, with Sam also riding Wimborne Conjuror; Gemma O’leary and Arnage Porsche; Jessica Rae and Fifth Avenue; and Jess Somerfield and Finch Farm Carpentaria

Although no strangers to Adelaide CCI5*L themselves, Sonja Johnson (Parkiarrup Showtime) Emma Mason (KPH Kingfisher), and Yona Lloyd (Ballahowe Ayurvedic) are all debuting their horses at the level.
