Australian eventer Sam Griffiths has today announced the sad news that star horse Happy Times has passed away at the age of 25.
By Heraldik xx out of Mandy (by Maraschino) and owned by Dinah Posford and Juliet Donald, Happy Times had numerous top 10 placings at five-star level – including third placings at both Badminton and Burghley Horse Trials in 2009.
Sam and Happy Times also won Saumur four-star in 2008, the 2012 World Cup qualifier at Chatsworth, and the 2010 Grantham Cup at Belton. They competed at Burghley Horse Trials on seven occasions, and Happy Times was inducted into the Eventing Riders Association (ERA) Hall of Fame at age 17. The gelding also amassed more than 1700 British Eventing points over his career.

At Championship level, Happy Times also partnered with Sam to represent Australian at the 2010 World Equestrian Games in Kentucky and the 2012 London Olympic Games.
“Upon retirement Happy went on to be exceptionally cared for by Mouse Berry for many years and found success in the show ring,” said Sam via a statement on the Griffiths Eventing Team Facebook page.
“Not only was Happy a beautiful looking horse, he was exceptionally talented in all three phases and would always rise to the big occasions. He was always a yard favourite. He will be much missed by his owners Dinah Posford, Juliet Donald and all of those who have been involved with him.
“He was a true superstar – and he knew it!”
Equestrian Life’s thoughts are with Dinah Posford, Juliet Donald, Sam Griffiths and all associated with this amazing horse. Rest in peace, Happy Times.
