Launched in 2016, the Barastoc Junior Squad aims to teach, inspire and guide young equine enthusiasts. The squad program assists young riders in gaining the experience needed to support a commercial sponsorship in adulthood, if it is desired or needed, as well as provide a solid understanding of feeding their horses. Each year Barastoc welcomes 20-30 new young riders to be part of the team.
Here, we catch up with current Barastoc Junior Squad member Finley Hiscock…
I’m 17 years old and a dedicated showjumper, and I’m proud to be part of the Barastoc Junior Squad. I’ve been riding for as long as I can remember, progressing from pony rides at home to competing at venues such as Boneo Park. I currently ride Kulwin, a nine-year-old OTTB I’ve had since July 2024, and Arassem, an eight-year-old OTTB I’ve had since July 2025.
Big goals
With Kulwin, my focus is on developing consistency, improving flatwork, and progressing through the showjumping levels while becoming more competitive in Junior classes. With Arassem, I’m working on rideability, balance, and jumping technique, with the aim of confidently stepping him up to 110cm before he is eventually sold on. As a rider, I aim to eventually jump Young Rider classes and higher. I place a strong emphasis on continuous improvement and setting goals that challenge me as a rider.
Favourite memories
Some of my best moments come from late-night rides after school and building partnerships with my horses.
Aspirational riders
I look up to riders such as Richard Vogel, Edwina Tops-Alexander, and Jack Whitaker. I particularly admire Jack for his positive attitude, energy, and composed approach on the sporting stage.
Dream horse
If I could ride any horse, it would be United Touch S for his scope, athleticism, and presence in the ring. I also believe that horses that challenge you play an important role in shaping a rider’s development and horsemanship.
