Launched in 2016, the Barastoc Junior Squad aims to teach, inspire and guide young equine enthusiasts. The squad program assists young riders in gaining the experience needed to support a commercial sponsorship in adulthood, if it is desired or needed, as well as provide a solid understanding of feeding their horses. Each year Barastoc welcomes 20-30 new young riders to be part of the team.
Here, we catch up with current Barastoc Junior Squad member Charlie Hiscock…
I am 17 years old and have been riding horses since I was four. Showjumping has always been my favourite discipline, and it’s where I’ve found my passion. My main horse is Dash (race name Almighty Dollar), a 16-year-old Thoroughbred gelding who I’ve owned for around two years. Together we’ve learned so much.
Big goals
My long-term goal is to learn as much as I possible can about the equestrian industry across all disciplines while continuing to develop as a rider and one day compete at Grand Prix level.
Favourite memories
My favourite memory with Dash is jumping our first 1.20m course. Ever since I was little, I have dreamed of reaching that height and doing that with Dash was incredibly special.
Aspirational riders
I’m incredibly grateful to my coaches, Jamie Murray and Diana Rovertson, who have taught me from day one the importance of hard work, patience and understanding that success is earned, not given.
One rider I admire is James Harvey. His calm, composed approach combined with his competitiveness is something I aspire to.
Dream horse
If I could ride any horse in the world it would have to be United Touch S, because of his incredible athleticism and seemingly effortless ability in the ring.
