Gazelle by name and by nature, Kent Farrington’s star horse was the highest earner in 2017 — raking in a whopping €1,026,435 or more than AUD$1,500,000.
With a win rate of 20% and place rate of 55%, Gazelle was the highest earner across all three disciplines (showjumping, eventing and dressage). Of course, with much higher prize money, the showjumpers typically earned a lot more in general than horses from the other two disciplines. Grey stallion LB Convall, ridden by Philipp Weishaupt, was next with earnings of €807,648, or more than AUD$1,200,000. Fit for Fun 13 (ridden by Luciana Diniz) and HH Azur (ridden by McLain Ward) both also cracked the AUD$1 million mark.
Edwina Tops-Alexander’s California finished 2017 with €326,807 (more than AUD$480,000) in prize money.
In the dressage world, it was Isabell Werth’s ride in Weihegold OLD who topped the list with €243,420 (more than AUD$360,000) in prize money. The horse also had an impressive 92.9% win rate and 100% place rate.

In eventing, it was Andrew Nicholson’s seasoned campaigner Nereo who topped the list with €142,510 (more than AUD$210,000). The horse had a 33.3% winning strike rate in 2017 and placed 100% of the time. Chris Burton’s ride, Graf Liberty, was 22nd on the list with €25,450 (more than AUD$38,000).
